Sheffield City Strategy

Sheffield First Partnership brings together the public, private, voluntary, community and faith sectors to work together to make Sheffield a successful city.  To do that it has established a vision that:

“Sheffield will be a successful distinctive city of European significance at the heart of a strong city region, with opportunities for all”

Sheffield is ambitous about its future and is intent on continuing to improve and to do so at a faster rate than other cities.

Following on from the second City Strategy, published in 2005, this updated document sets out the steps we will take to realise our vision and secure transformational change within the city to 2010.  It provides leadership and a shared sense of purpose for the various agencies and organisations that have a part to play in shaping life in Sheffield.  It also documents our successes and achievements over the period of the last strategy and identifies where more work needs to be done.

We chose this point to review the City Strategy for a number of reasons:

  1. To take account of progress and assess what more needs to be done in achieving the existing priorities for the city.
  2. To respond to the recent feedback we have received from the people of Sheffield.
  3. To respond to the changing local and national policy environment.

The last strategy contained 5 Big Ambitions, which reflected our aspirations for the city’s future – areas where gradual improvement was not sufficient and a ‘step-change’ was required.  We have reviewed these Big Ambitions to ensure that they still reflect the most pressing things that we need to do to create real improvements in Sheffield.

Our revised Big Ambitions for the city are:

  1. Sheffield to have an economy that matches the best in Europe.
  2. Sheffield to establish excellence in its public transport system.
  3. Every neighbourhood to be a successful neighbourhood.
  4. Everyone to be able to fulfil their potential through learning and enterprise.
  5. Sheffield to be an attractive and sustainable, low-carbon city.

These ambitions will be achieved by bringing together the plans and strategies produced by the ‘family‘ of partnerships spanning the key areas of our work. The City Strategy sets a combined challenge: to drive forward the transformation of the city‘s economy, ensure that the social divides within the city narrow still further, and sustain and improve the city’s environment.

The Partnership has agreed five themes, below, which set out clearly and succinctly the characteristics of a strong and successful Sheffield.

  1. Strong economy
  2. Successful neighbourhoods
  3. Inclusive, healthy communities
  4. Great place to grow up
  5. Environmental Excellence

All these themes come together in a balanced strategy to secure a sustainable, thriving future for the city of Sheffield.
