Culture and Sport Partnership

Sheffield has a vision to become a European centre for cultural excellence, where culture contributes to the development of successful individuals, thriving communities and a strong economy. Our vision will be achieved through the active participation and endeavours of our citizens, communities and businesses in an inclusive partnership that will deliver a vibrant image for Sheffield. The vision is captured in the Cultural Strategy that was launched in 2006 - download a copy at the bottom of this page.

Cultural activities are increasingly important to Sheffield’s fast changing, diverse and cosmopolitan society. They are vital ingredients in the life of our creative city and the region and play a fundamental part in enhancing the civic pride and the daily life of individuals and communities.

In the widest sense, culture has pioneered innovative and sophisticated approaches that effectively contribute to the city’s priorities of creating successful neighbourhoods and economic regeneration, being instrumental in creating improvements in health, lifelong learning, community cohesion, economic vitality and stimulating civic pride.

Culture is an overarching term, which encompasses a wide range of activities and brings together many specialist areas in a creative community, providing a powerful dynamism that is both supportive and effective. Specialist areas include:
  • Sport, leisure, play and physical activity
  • Performing, media, visual and community arts
  • Museums, heritage and archives
  • Libraries, literature and information
  • Cultural tourism, festivals and events
  • Creative, digital and sporting industries
  • Parks and open spaces
  • Urban design

We believe that culture has now an even bigger part to play in the success of the city and by working together in partnership we will ensure that we achieve excellence.
The role of the Partnership Board for Culture is to drive transformational change in developing new approaches, stronger partnerships, influencing investment and ensuring greater integration of culture in the life of the city.

The Culture Board will be responsible for the detailed mapping, prioritisation and action planning of the short, medium and long-term objectives and delivery of the targets within the strategy.
