Environment Strategy 2007-10A refreshed environment strategy was recently published setting out the aspiration and objectives for environmental excellence in Sheffield over the next three years. It represents the ambition of Sheffield First Partnership and supports the refreshed City Strategy 2007-2010 supporting the theme of Environmental Excellence and Sheffield’s Big Ambition of becoming ‘An Attractive, Sustainable, Low Carbon City’. It also clearly sets out the role of Sheffield First Environment partnership in achieving environmental excellence and contains actions and expectations for Sheffield First Partnership as a whole, to be developed as part of the action planning review process. Sustainable Business ProgrammeThis innovative training programme provides practical guidance and support to help businesses engage with challenges and benefits of sustainable practice. Aimed at senior managers who are keen to develop a strategy in this area, the 10-week course offers accreditation with CIEH and the opportunity to win a package of EBS support worth £6000. In addition a 40% reduction on fees is offered to South Yorkshire businesses via A4E. The course is a collaborative venture between the University of Sheffield, Environmental Monitoring Solutions, Business in the Community, Groundwork Sheffield, A3E or the SFE partnership. Community Environment Award 2007 - winnersThe winners of the Community Environmental Awards 2007 were announced at an evening ceremony in the Sheffield Town Hall on Monday December 3rd. Over the last four years, these awards have recognised community projects put forward by voluntary groups that have made a difference to Sheffield’s environment, showcasing best practise and inspiring others to undertake their own initiatives. Presented by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor Arthur Dunworth, five projects were recognised at the Awards Ceremony. Page Hall Community Association were awarded as joint winners for their efforts to transform their local community through making several physical improvements, such as installing hanging basket, using a community-led approach. The other joint winner, Friends of Woolley Woods Park, regenerated run-down public realm by creating a new play space which offers a range of interesting play equipment, including some specifically designed for disabled children. Three projects were highly commended including Friends of Ecclesall Woods for their efforts to restore 1km of footpaths in Ecclesall Woods, Norton Free Primary School for developing a new wildlife garden, pond and planting area and Burncross Action Team who brought about a range of environmental improvements helping to give the area a unique identity and the local residents a sense of pride and ownership. Professor Ted Kitchen, Chairman of the Environment Board, commented that the standard of entries was particularly high and commended all those who had taken part. Sheffield is My Planet (SIMP)The steering group is developing a community engagement strategy as part of the Climate Change Action programme within Sheffield. Partnership Board meetingThe next Partnership Board meeting is on Wednesday 23 January, 9.30-12.30, at the Town Hall, Sheffield City Council. Members of the public are welcome to attend from 9.30 for the Part A session. Agenda items for consideration will include the REAP model for carbon footprinting Sheffield's carbon emissions and will consider the action plan to the environmental excellence strategy. It will also consider the proposals for Sheffield Is My Planet and the future strategy for the development of the waterways as part of Sheffield's adaptation to climate change. Papers for the meeting will be posted on the Our Meetings page seven days in advance of the meeting. Climate Change CondensedClimate Change Condensed is now coming to Sheffield. The Climate Outreach & Information Network has created a fantastic new 3-hour 'all you need to know' course about Climate Change: Climate Change Condensed. This whistle-stop tour uses the carefully-concocted recipe of expert knowledge (we bring the experts to you on film), group discussion and pair work. Led by the training’s creator, George Marshall, who has 20 years’ experience in environmental communication the session is to be held on Thursday 13th December, 5-8pm, Central United Reform Church, 60 Norfolk Street, Sheffield, S1 2JB.
