Shelli Cooper

Shelli Cooper
Shelli is proud to be born and bred in Sheffield.  She spent eight years as an advice worker and advocate in both the voluntary and public sectors.  In Barnsley she worked in the Local Authority’s Economic Development Dept and was involved in a number of early regeneration projects in former coalfield communities.  After becoming a mum Shelli retrained as a teacher. She taught at Sheffield College, Northern College and, briefly, at Hallam University.  For the past ten years Shelli has been back in the voluntary sector in Sheffield where she now works for SCOOP Aid Ltd developing and managing projects aimed at helping lone parents move towards the labour market.  Shelli maintains her interest in and commitment to adult education through an active involvement with VCTrain.

Pauline Grice

Pauline Grice
Pauline moved into the area in 2005, having spent a great deal of her working life in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in Coalfields communities.  A CIPFA qualified accountant & member of the Institute of Business Advisors, she also holds a Diploma in Water and Environmental Management.  Having worked in the Voluntary Sector and in Social Enterprises since 1982, most of her positions were at Board level, some paid, some voluntary at both national and local level.  She also worked at senior management level in the public and private sectors within County and Borough Councils.
 
Pauline is now the Chief Executive of the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, a long-established grant-making charity supporting South Yorkshire’s most deprived communities.  In 2006/7 it delivered £1.9m in grants to over 500 groups throughout South Yorkshire, of which £970,000 was for Sheffield. SYCF owns a third share in the Key Fund for the Social Economy, together with its partners the Development Trusts Association and SCEDU.
 
As a non-native of Sheffield, Pauline can see with clear eyes what a fantastic city it is, and what great potential it presents to become one of the top 4 cities in England.

Marina Larios

Marina Larios
Marina Larios is President of WiTEC Europe with offices in 14 member states and Director of Inova Consultancy, an organisation providing consultancy services in the area of diversity and equal opportunities. Marina has been a speaker at various international conferences presenting positive actions to increase the representation of female entrepreneurs and women in SET including recent presentations at the UN in New York and OECD in Geneva. She is currently an advisor for the Cambridge Centre of Gender Studies; Co-Founder of SYFEN (South Yorkshire Female Entrepreneurs Programme); ex-Trustee of the SYWDT; Co-Director of MEXWii ; Steering Group member of the BME Forum  at the SCC and Co-Founder of the International Taskforce-Global Women in ICT launched at UNESCO, Paris in 2006.
 
Marina was nominated for the “Businesswomen of the Year” Award 2007 – SCC and was recognised under the award of Enterprise Champion by SFEDI (Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative) in April 2008.

Cllr Jan Wilson

Cllr Jan Wilson
Cllr Jan Wilson is the Leader of the Labour Group at Sheffield City Council.  She was born and bred in Sheffield.  She was elected to the city council in 1992 and now represents the Manor Castle Ward.  In her sixteen years as a councillor, Jan has held many positions of responsibility, including Leader of the Council in 1998, and from 2002 to 2008 during which time she chaired the Sheffield First Partnership board.  She has also chaired the cabinet, the planning and economic development and education committees. She is a member of the Board of Yorkshire Forward and is deputy chair of the Passenger Transport Authority.

Simon Gedye

Simon Gedye
Simon Gedye has worked as an architect in the region for 20 years, specialising in designing new buildings in historic areas and the imaginative reuse of listed buildings.
 
In the last few years, projects under Simon’s design and direction have included Longshaw Discovery Centre, which was commended in the Wood Awards and RIBA East Midlands; the Vestry Hall Community Learning Centre; Scarborough Creative Industries Centre; and the Art House, accessible studios for disabled artists.
 
In 2007 Simon set up Studio Gedye, a design led practice that focuses on producing distinctive architecture, for residential and commercial clients.
 
Simon established Sheffield Civic Trust in 2006, of which he is Chair, to raise the level of debate about the quality of the built environment. The Trust has established itself as a champion of the best art, architecture and urban design for the city.
 

Stephen Sly

Stephen Sly
Stephen Sly is the Sheffield Office Managing Partner for the international law firm DLA Piper and responsible for 400 staff.  DLA Piper moved their Sheffield operation into No. 1 St Paul's Place in the Peace Gardens in 2006. 
 
Stephen obtained his law degree at Sheffield University and has remained in Sheffield since 1981.  He has served for 4 years as a governor at a large Sheffield primary school, and for 10 years as a Deputy District Judge on the North East Circuit.  He is also a Qualified Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.  His practice includes public as well as private sector clients.  Stephen has a commitment and passion for  Sheffield and its continuing success.

Jane Brown, Director, Sheffield First Partnership

Jane Brown
Jane has a long history of successfully leading strategic partnerships, having developed her real commitment to partnership-working in 1998, when she became Director of Safer York Partnership, the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership for the City of York.  She has since continued to pursue this career path as Chief Executive of Darlington Partnership, and Head of Partnerships and Neighbourhoods, City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council.  Her previous experience had been varied and interesting, starting with nursing upon leaving school, which she left to pursue a BA Hons in Social Policy and Administration at the University of York.  In the years that followed Jane worked within many voluntary organisations, as both a paid employee and as a volunteer, as well as continuing to pursue further academic studies.  She has worked across many different policy areas and organisational cultures and puts this experience to good use in the partnership setting.

David Roulston

David Roulston
David has been the Chief Executive of SheffCare since July 2007.  SheffCare is a registered charity which provides residential, day and short-term care to over 800 older people throughout the city of Sheffield.  Prior to his appointment at SheffCare, his previous roles have included being a director of a charity for people with learning disabilities and the managing director of a Newcastle based Housing Association.  
 
David graduated from Northumbria University with an MBA with commendation in 2003 and was subsequently invited to be a visiting fellow to the University.  He has a particular interest in the needs of people with dementia and recently chaired an advisory group overseeing research by Edinburgh University looking at the best ways to deliver services for people with learning disabilities and dementia.

Jan Sobieraj

Jan Sobieraj
Jan Sobieraj is Chief Executive of NHS Sheffield, with a budget of approximately £850m and 2,500 staff.
 
NHS Sheffield has three distinct challenges.  These are, in collaboration and consultation with all local stakeholders, to tackle the inequality, health and well-being of its population (a 14-year life gap exists), to commission a comprehensive and equitable range of high quality, responsive and efficient services and to decide the best way to provide these services where this gives best value.
 
Before his appointment Jan was Chief Executive of Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and previously Chief Executive at an NHS Trust in Lincolnshire working in community and mental health services. 
 
Jan is a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Centre of Health Improvement and Leadership at the University of Lincoln and Sheffield Hallam University, Governor of the Health Foundation,  a member of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement Sounding Board and a member of the NHS National Advisory Committee for Resource  Allocation.

Beverley Webster

Beverley Webster
Beverley Webster ran a manufacturing company for over 20 years producing equipment for the mining and construction industries and as the first woman and youngest ever president of her sector trade association received an OBE for services to industry.  Now a fully qualified IFA, she understands the pressures facing owners/managers in balancing business and personal financial planning.

Beverley served on the Small Business Council, presenting recommendations from industry to the Secretary of State for Industry and was a member of the Foundation Degree Task Force advising Ministers on future strategy for the development of vocational qualifications. She now sits on the Foundation Degree Forward management board and as Chairman of the UK Careers Academy Advisory Board to Longley Park Sixth Form College is committed to raising aspirations of young people in Sheffield.
